Being a coastal girl originally, who loves fishing and all the related seafood catching activities, I knew that the best bit of the yabbies was of course the sweet yummy meat in the claws. I did the dutiful fishmonger job of preparing the tails, shelling them raw, which is a lot harder than prawns let me tell you, for VIP diners, Pete and Henry. Bodhi, of course, was totally refusing to partake in our lovely meal of fine cuisine, opting for a tin of spaghetti.
After cleaning and preparation, I set to cooking up our lovely feast. I thought beauty, I'll have all these claws to myself. Pete wont eat them, and I'm sure Henry will only want the tails. Insert very evil selfish chuckle to myself about now.
With tails cooked and delivered to my VIP diners, and one substitute meal from a can opened, I began to cook my own sumptuous feast. In the background, I could hear, oh yummy, and other assorted gastronomic exhaltations from my special people. All the while, I was chuckling thinking, "the best bits are still cooking and they are mine, ALL mine I tell you," in that evil manical tone.
So with tails hoovered in by Henry, poor Pete got nearly none, I dished up my claws, covered in deliciously stinky garlic butter sauce, preparing myself to gorge on them. In the corner of my eye, I can see this little person hovering in a fashion not dissimilar to a sea gull. " Mum, can I try one of those?"
You can guess what happened next. I think the only person who gorged the self stupid was my seafood loving Henry. Whilst Pete and I got enough to satisfy our taste buds, I think I have created a monster. First thing Henry asked to do as his eyes opened this morning was , " can we go and check the yabbie pots this morning?"
And as I type this, the Derrick boys have been out to check the yabbie pots, and Henry has bought back another bucket of yabbies for me to prepare for yet another Gastronomic feast for him. It's nice to know he likes my cooking, and I'm more than happy to cook more for him. The downside, is now that now he knows how good that they are, they have been added to the list of yummy food items that can no longer be consumed in his presence without sharing.
I hate it when the kids like the same yummy foods you do! Those yabbies sound delicious!!
